Osteoporosis: How My Classes Can Help
Improve bone health with safe, effective movement. My classes support strength, mobility & confidence for osteoporosis & osteopenia.
Have you just been diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia and have no idea where to start? Or maybe you’ve had the diagnosis for a while but are confused by all the information you’ve been given. Perhaps you feel like you haven’t been given any information at all, other than the diagnosis itself.
You might have been told not to bend forwards, backwards or twist, and now you’re wondering how on earth you’re meant to do your washing, never mind exercise and stay fit!
Well, you’re in the right place. My sessions help you navigate the jargon, understand your condition, and—most importantly—learn to listen to your body.
Understanding Osteoporosis and Osteopenia
Being diagnosed with a condition can feel overwhelming, and searching the internet often adds to the confusion. So, let’s start with some straightforward definitions to make things clearer.
Osteopenia
Osteopenia means you have lower-than-average bone density, but not low enough to be classed as osteoporosis. It’s a bit like prediabetes in relation to diabetes. Losing bone density is a natural part of ageing, and it happens at different rates in different people. Being diagnosed with osteopenia does not always mean you will develop osteoporosis, and in most cases, it can be managed through lifestyle choices.
Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones become weaker and more likely to break. There are many different medications for osteoporosis, which fall into two categories:
-Medications that reduce the breakdown of bone.
-Medications that promote the formation of bone.
Regardless of your diagnosis, a healthy lifestyle is key to bone health. This includes a nutrient-rich, balanced diet with adequate calcium (700mg daily) and vitamin D (1000IU daily).
It’s also worth bearing in mind that bone density and hence strength can be improved. So whilst you can’t undo damage that has already been done you can slow down the progression and you can go from a diagnosis of osteoporosis to osteopenia.
How Exercise Can Help
Exercise is essential for preserving bone mass, building muscle strength, and supporting overall bone health. It also plays a crucial role in falls prevention, which is one of the biggest risks for fractures.
In my classes, we focus on weight-bearing and strength-building exercises—without the need to lift weights or go to the gym! We also work on balance and mobility to help you stay steady and confident in your movements.
If you’re feeling unsure about how to exercise safely with osteoporosis or osteopenia, my sessions offer a warm, welcoming environment where you can move with confidence and ease. We focus on what you can do rather than what you can’t, helping you to stay strong, active, and independent.
